Diisocyanates is a unique name for a chemical substance found in several common products. These products can be harmful if they are not handled correctly. The course can easily be completed digitally.
The course is developed by FIDL in collaboration with Medco dinHMS.
COMPLETION: The course is conducted as combined e-learning and webinar. The e-learning is carried out as a game via an app on a phone or tablet, and can also be carried out on PC/Mac. After the game is completed, the participant is required to participate in a webinar with oral discussion.
INCLUDED IN THE COURSE: Game, digital compendium, webinar and course certificate.
About the course
From August 24, 2023, anyone using or handling diisocyanates and diisocyanate-containing mixtures and products must have completed safe use training. Diisocyanates can be found in several products. Examples could be construction foams, adhesives, paints, varnishes, sealants, industrial mixtures and products or artificial plaster.
If you are wondering whether your products contain diisocyanates, you can check the chemical index (safety data sheet), ask your supplier or your local occupational health service for assistance.
FIDL, together with us at Medco dinHMS., has developed a game-based e-learning course in diisocyanates. The course takes around an hour to complete and can be done from your phone, tablet or computer. After the digital course there is a webinar with discussion, as required by law.
Workplace-appropriate training
If employees in your company work with products containing diisocyanates in the following processes, company-specific training may also be necessary. I.e. a teaching program that is adapted to your products and working methods. This may apply if you work with:
• Management of open mixtures at room temperature (including in foam tunnels).
• Spraying in a ventilated cabin.
• Coating with a roller.
• Coating with brush.
• Imposition by dipping and pouring.
• Mechanical finishing (e.g. cutting) or handling of incompletely cured products that are still hot, or recently cured.
• Cleaning and disposal.
• Casting of products.
• Any other use with similar exposure that can be absorbed through the skin and/or by inhalation.
If you are engaged in these operations, you can contact your nearest Medco dinHMS department, where the local occupational hygienist can assist in creating a teaching program tailored to your business. In these cases, the FIDL course is often combined with a visit to the workplace, but it is also possible with a full teaching program at the workplace.
What exactly are diisocyanates?
Isocyanates is a generic term for chemical substances with one or more functional isocyanate groups (NCO) in their molecular structure. Isocyanates may consist of one (mono-) or several (di- and tri-) isocyanate groups. Diisocyanates are molecules containing two isocyanate groups. Even small amounts of diisocyanates can be harmful to health. It can cause damage to the respiratory tract, cause irritation to the skin and eyes, be carcinogenic and cause hypersensitivity and lead to allergic reactions.
